MT5 Layout Hacks for a Cleaner Prop Trading Workspace
You’re not alone if you’ve used MetaTrader 5 (MT5) and felt as though there were too many charts, indicators, and toolbars. The majority of prop traders begin by using the MT5 layout by default and simplify their complexities. However, a disorganized trade area is a disorganized mentality. Additionally, you cannot afford needless distractions in a prop firm setting where accuracy, quickness, and concentration are important.
Understanding the MT5 layout is therefore important for more reasons than just appearances; it’s also about streamlining your process, reducing stress, and positioning yourself for confident, clean transactions.
Let’s talk about useful layout tips that can elevate your MT5 workstation to a professional level.
Why a Clean Workspace Matters in Prop Trading
Prop firm trading differs from regular retail trading. There is pressure to meet performance goals, drawdown criteria, account restrictions, and other regulations while trading someone else’s money. If you’re searching through twelve open charts or attempting to locate an indication behind five layers of clutter, you can’t afford to miss a setup. A clean layout provide:
- Faster decision-making
- Less screen fatigue
- Better focus on key data
- Fewer misclicks and mistakes
Step 1: Start With a Fresh Slate
Here’s how to clean house:
- Shut down every chart window: Choose Close with a right-click on each chart tab.
- Eliminate unnecessary toolbars: Uncheck any toolbars you don’t use by going to View > Toolbars. If Standard and Line Studies are your thing, keep it simple.
- Remove any panels that aren’t needed: Market Watch, Navigator, and Toolbox are all occasionally helpful, but not always. The ones you don’t need in your face all the time can be unpinned or closed.
Step 2: Create Your Core Workspace
Every prop trader is different but most will benefit from a 2–4 chart layout depending on the style.
For example:
- 1 Chart: Keep it basic if you’re a scalper who only looks at one asset.
- 2 Charts: Excellent for settings throughout the day. One displays your entering timeframe (M5 or M15), while the other displays a higher timeframe (for example, H1 or H4).
- Charts 3–4: Perfect if you utilize a multi-timeframe approach or like to track many linked instruments, such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and DXY.
Layout tips:
- Windows with tiles: Select Window > Windows with tiles. Your charts are automatically arranged in a neat grid as a result.
- Use profiles: Layout profiles may be saved in MT5. Make one for every market or plan. (Select Profiles > File > Save As.)
- Configure the defaults for the chart: Adjust the candlesticks, colors, grid off, and other parameters by right-clicking on a clean chart. Then, right-click once again and select Template > Save Template. Use this for all upcoming charts.
Step 3: Strip Down the Charts
A lot of traders slap 5–10 indicators onto their charts and wonder why their entries feel muddy. Clean charts means clean reads.
Try this instead:
- Turn off the grid: Press Ctrl+G. Clean.
- Hide volumes: Right-click the chart > Properties > Common tab > uncheck Show volumes.
- Use minimalist indicators: If you’re gonna use indicators, stick to a couple that you actually use. And make sure they’re visually subtle—thin lines, soft colors.
Step 4: Customize Your Toolbars
Here’s what you can do:
- Drag and drop icons: Go to View > Toolbars > Customize. From here, you can remove stuff you don’t use and add things you need frequently—like timeframes, zoom, or drawing tools.
- Create quick-access buttons: Want to add “New Order” or “Templates” to the top bar? You can.
- Use keyboard shortcuts: Memorize or customize them. Ctrl+T for the Terminal, Ctrl+N for the Navigator. Makes switching way smoother.
Once you’ve got the toolbar setup that works for you, save it because MT5 does have a habit of randomly reverting things during updates.
Step 5: Use Detachable Charts (Multi-Monitor Hack)
MT5 allows you to move charts outside of the main terminal, something most traders are unaware of unless you’re lucky enough to have a multi-monitor setup.
To enable detached charts, navigate to Settings > Trade. You may then drag a chart tab to a different screen.
Why this rocks:
- You can keep one monitor strictly for your execution window
- Another monitor for higher timeframes
- One for news/events or trading journal
Step 6: Color Code Your Layout
This one’s more psychological than technical but it works wonders.
Try assigning colors to different types of charts in MT5 or timeframes:
- Blue for higher timeframes (H1 and up)
- Green for your entry chart
- Gray for passive watchlist pairs
- Red for high-risk trades or alerts
Although it may seem silly such visual clues help you stay focused and prevent confusion when you’re switching between configurations during a live session.
